Motor Test Stand

Finding the thrust of a motor.

The motor test stand has proven itself. After dozens of updates and changes, the motor test stand accurately measures the thrust of a model rocket motor and provides valuable data such as Total Impulse and provides a precise graph. It is equipped with an Arduino UNO PCB, which takes data from an accurate load cell and amplifier - while also providing a breathtaking view of a model rocket motor.

History

V.1.4

This was the "first" version that we tested the model rocket motor on. It used four load cells from a kitchen scale wired together in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. It was very slow and inaccurate and could only fit 18mm motors. Along with that, it had no LCD, LEDS, or the speed. This was the first test stand that used an Arduino. Previous versions used a kitchen scale and a camera recording the display (very primitive).

V.2.6

This version used an LCD, a new single-point load cell, and it featured an LCD and lights. This version still only fit 18mm motors. It was slightly more responsive, but still inaccurate. It had pretty much the same code, except for the LCD parts.

V.3.1

Version 3.1 was the largest and final update (so far). It added a motor mount that could accommodate 18mm, 24mm, and 29mm motors. It also featured improved code that reduced data processing down from 2 hours to 2 minutes. This version also measured faster and gave us total impulse.

Version 3.1 - The Ultimate Rig

Faster. More accurate. Easier.

Version 3.1 was the goal we were trying to get to. Accurate measurements, fast data processing, an ability to measure the thrust of different sized motors, and improved code. To learn more details check out the video below:
